Why The Lion King is Still the King of the Movie Jungle

The Pride Lands of Cinema
The Lion King was released in 1994, when I was just a year old. Since then, we've seen
tremendous changes in all genres of cinema, and we tend to look with somewhat of a
condescending air at the relics of the past, writing them off as primitive. I disagree
wholeheartedly with this practice. This film, much like Pride Rock itself, has stood the
test of time and continues to be a legitimate piece of artistic literature-- worth seeing
and worth talking about, as illustrated by the following lessons it has taught us.
Allegedly a film just for children, The Lion King goes so far beyond the mind of a child
and calls upon us as global citizens to think more deeply about ourselves and our place in
the universe.

When he asked my husband and I what we thought about his plan for the body art, we said,
“Do whatever you want. You’re an adult. Just don’t get anything tattooed on your face. You
might regret those death tears or that spider web at some point.” And then we both laughed

– hard.
Truthfully though, neither one of us is opposed to him getting a tattoo. We both have a few
of our own. Thus, the problem for my son is not getting our approval, it’s coming up with
the cash to pay for the damn thing. You see, as a just-starting-out musician – sorry,
“soon-to-be rock star” – he has very little money.
“I’ll do it soon then,” he said, hearing our response but promptly forgetting his financial
situation.

“A good tattoo can cost quite a bit, you know,” I cautioned. “And you don’t want to skimp
on something like that. I’ve seen some pretty bad tattoos in my day.” To illustrate my
point, I showed him this picture that I just happened to run across while searching up
“lion tattoos” on Google.

“Can I borrow $1,200?” my son replied.

“Are you kidding? You’ll have to save that money yourself. But I could probably help you
come up a few designs of your own in order to make it cheaper,” I snickered.
As there are always a bunch of people freeloading at my house – mostly the boys’ friends –
I knew help was not too far away. I simply went downstairs and interrupted a fairly intense
game of Call Of Duty. “Hey, you there,” I said to the closest available boy. “Draw me a
lion. Earn your keep.” I handed him a whiteboard and erasable marker. “Do this for me, and
I might let you have a drink of water from the tap if you get thirsty.” Dutifully, he did
his best.
Afterward, I forced every single person on that couch to play my little game. This is what
I got
"Remember who you are."
Mufasa's last words (or those of his ghost, rather) to his son as he fades into the
celestial background leave an echo both in Simba's heart and in ours. After the horror of
the stampede that killed his father, his time away in the jungle, and his mental conversion
to the "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle, these words fall heavily on Simba's conscience. "No
worries" is a great escape tool to utilize from time to time, but we cannot walk away from
our true identity. We can change our present and thereby our future as well, but our past
is part of us-- it is an intrinsic, indelible part of our composition that, try as we may,
will never be erased. Responsibility seems to be a quality extremely lacking in our society
today. Who are we? Can we even remember?

The Great Circle of Life
As Mufasa explains to a young Simba, "When we die, our bodies become the grass. And the
antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great circle of life." We have
inherited this earth not to squander nor destroy, but to cherish and cultivate for the
generations to come. Upon seeing the desolation that is post-Scar Pride Rock, Timon
mutters, "Sheesh! Talk about your fixer upper!" The world today is somewhat of a fixer
upper, and only by keeping the future in mind while making decisions about the present will
we be able to continue participating in that Great Circle of Life. In other words, we
cannot eat all the antelope, metaphorically speaking. We must learn balance before we can
learn peace.
The Pride Rock of the Future
By the end of the film, Pride Rock is once again beautiful and flourishing. Like the
lessons we can take from this movie, it stands the test of time and continues on as a
symbol of strength for future generations.
