As there are always a bunch of people freeloading at my house – mostly the boys’ friends – I knew help was not too far away. I simply went downstairs and interrupted a fairly intense game of Call Of Duty. “Hey, you there,” I said to the closest available boy. “Draw me a lion. Earn your keep.” I handed him a whiteboard and erasable marker. “Do this for me, and I might let you have a drink of water from the tap if you get thirsty.” Dutifully, he did his best.

Afterward, I forced every single person on that couch to play my little game. This is what I got…
The Lion King was released in 1994, when I was just a year old. Since then, we've seen tremendous changes in all genres of cinema, and we tend to look with somewhat of a condescending air at the relics of the past, writing them off as primitive. I disagree wholeheartedly with this practice. This film, much like Pride Rock itself, has stood the test of time and continues to be a legitimate piece of artistic literature-- worth seeing and worth talking about, as illustrated by the following lessons it has taught us. Allegedly a film just for children, The Lion King goes so far beyond the mind of a child and calls upon us as global citizens to think more deeply about ourselves and our place in the universe.

"It means 'no worries' for the rest of your days. . . it's our problem-free philosophy. . . Hakuna Matata." In this world, there are things we can change, and things we cannot. As a perfectionist who is extremely attentive to detail and prone to OCD tendencies, I would do well to remember this motto in the future. It is a simple lesson but a good one. There will always be evil in the world; it is our challenge to find the beauty amidst the chaos and destruction.
As Mufasa explains to a young Simba, "When we die, our bodies become the grass. And the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great circle of life." We have inherited this earth not to squander nor destroy, but to cherish and cultivate for the generations to come. Upon seeing the desolation that is post-Scar Pride Rock, Timon mutters, "Sheesh! Talk about your fixer upper!" The world today is somewhat of a fixer upper, and only by keeping the future in mind while making decisions about the present will we be able to continue participating in that Great Circle of Life. In other words, we cannot eat all the antelope, metaphorically speaking. We must learn balance before we can learn peace.

The Pride Rock of the Future

By the end of the film, Pride Rock is once again beautiful and flourishing. Like the lessons we can take from this movie, it stands the test of time and continues on as a symbol of strength for future generations.

As for the lions, they provide a bit of adventure as they're modeling for photos. Burrard-Lucas states of a run-in with four cubs, "They intuitively recognised the front of BeetleCam and would try to circle around to attack it from behind. They also grew bolder whenever BeetleCam retreated, swiping at it with their oversized paws. We were just getting the hang of this new game when disaster struck; BeetleCam’s front left wheel hadn’t been tightened properly and it worked its way off! The cubs instantly seemed to recognise that the buggy was in distress and they closed in...The cubs ran off with it and proceeded to have a highly raucous game as they tried to steal it off each other. We had to wait for over an hour and a half before we were finally able to retrieve the saliva-sodden tire! To our amazement, it had a few punctures but was otherwise undamaged. We slotted it back onto BeetleCam and we were ready to go again!"

That's quite a testament to how much abuse the BeetleCam can take and still be ready to roll for more images.

"Over the course of the next few days, we were able to gain new understanding and respect for the lions we were photographing. We were always mindful that we didn’t want to harass them or intrude on their lives. However, we came to appreciate that lions are incredibly curious cats and full of the bravado that comes from being the Masai Mara’s top predator. This resulted in plenty more raucous games with the youngsters and some wonderful encounters with older individuals, who treated BeetleCam with nonchalant disdain, deliberately ignoring it as it manoeuvred around them," says Burrard-Lucas.

I found about one in seven images were CC, but many of those were still not available for commercial use. (Morgue does offer HTML for posting the image, though, which I found quite helpful.)

Unrestricted Stock: A mix of stock photos and vectors, this site is entirely free and everything may be used for commercial purposes according to their license agreement. I wouldn't say there are a ton of options on this site, but everything I have seen is of good quality.

Microsoft Office: Yes, this is real: Microsoft giving something useful away for free on a commercial level. The images are offered to anyone with Office.com or MS Office Web Apps: "You may copy and use the media elements in projects and documents." But there are a few rules, so check them out.

Pixabay: Tons of great images all free and in line with creative commons for commercial use. I found their search function superior to other internal image search engines.

FreeDigitalPhotos.net: Only the small sizes of images are free. And keep in mind they require attribution on all free images used (HTML code is offered too) and your email address must be provided.
